Greater Hoopoe Lark in Little Rann of Kutch

Greater Hoopoe Lark (Alaemon alaudipes) is a rare resident in the Little Rann of Kutch. It is now difficult to see this bird and one has to go deep inside the Rann for this. It is usually seen around the fringes of the ‘bets’ (islands) in the Rann.

On 6 December 2015, I visited ‘Mardek Bet’ in the Rann with Manoj Finava and Yash Zalaria. There we saw a Greater Hoopoe Lark, which was feeding on the fringes of the bet. It was quite bold and was not concerned with our presence. We could get really good photos.

The black and white on the wings looks very distinctive when seen in flight.

It is always wonderful to see this desert specialist in the Rann !
